Kingsland Urban Design Competition Entry

Kingsland’s rich history is part of what forms the distinctive character of the suburb, and gives it the quirky vibe that is so different from other areas in Auckland. In our design, we wanted to key into this unique feeling by referencing the history of the site, while creating a welcoming, interactive and fun space that the community and visitors alike could enjoy.

A fusion of the past and the present was the main driver in our design process, and the history of the site served to inform the major design features.

Since tram and rail connections were important aspects in the foundation of the suburb, we wanted to reference this in our use of tracks for our moveable planters and public seating. Having street furniture on tracks would also enable vehicle access to the church when necessary.

Kingsland Road was originally known as Cabbage Tree Swamp Road, until settlers in the surrounding suburbs lobbied for a name change. This particular facet of history appealed to us, and we decided to reintroduce an element of what the area used to look like by way of integrating a small cabbage tree ‘forest’ into our design.
