Kingsland Urban Design Competition Entry

We look to create Kingsland as a people place, a transitional gateway. With the new Auckland City Master Plan in process, Kingsland currently sits just outside the constraints of the City, which builds considerable benefits for the Kingsland area. In addition to this, having Eden Park situated near by brings an influx of people into the Kingsland suburb. The design shy’s away from the format of the brief as we felt that in order for kingsland to function properly the surrounding context needed to be dealt with. The major move for our design proposal was to swing the balance in favour of pedestrian use, but also keeping functional vehicle lanes. The current junction of Sandringham Road and New North Road is over whelmed with car lanes, 6 lanes at its widest point, and then bottle necks down to 2 available lanes (plus one medium strip) at peak hours. In order for a pedestrian friendly environment this problem needs to be addressed.
